PUMPKIN WALK TIME!!

Posted on September 27, 2025 By Hardwick Trails
Events

Come for a magical walk Sunday, October 5 at 6:00PM  on the Hardwick Trails.

The woodlands will be glowing with pumpkin faces carved by Hardwick Elementary School student-artists, an annual beloved task orchestrated by art teacher Beth LeCours.  All are invited to gather and enjoy cider and donuts, where the friendliest story-telling witch (aka Lesa Cathcart) awaits. We remain hopeful that the fire ban will be lifted by this event so that we can once again have our bonfire (we already have battery operated tea lights for the pumpkins). If not, we promise a creative alternative to ensure a magic-filled evening. Children, parents, friends, grandparents–all the community — are invited to this 21st annual fall community celebration, sponsored by the Hardwick Trails Committee. Park in the Hazen Union parking lot and follow the pumpkin signs to the Pumpkin Walk trailhead.

Geology Walk on Hardwick Trails

Posted on September 27, 2025September 27, 2025 By Hardwick Trails
Educational, Events

When: Saturday, October 4th at 9:00 a.m.

Where: Meet at the Hardwick Trails trailhead kiosk behind Hazen Union School

Did you know that Hardwick used to be the bottom of a glacial lake or that the bedrock of the Hardwick area was formed in a shallow, warm sea? The ice sheet that once covered all of New England may have melted away thousands of years ago, but there are still plenty of features and many clues that reveal the subsurface and glacial history of Hardwick. Come join Dave Mitchell and Hardwick Conservation Committee chair Lucy Zendzian while we explore the geology and soils of Hardwick Trails.

Everyone is welcome at this free event sponsored by the Hardwick Trails Committee and the Conservation Commission. The Hardwick Trails Kiosk is located behind the parking lot of Hazen Union School.

Participants should be prepared for a two mile walk. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring your walking stick/poles too. In case of rain, the event will occur Sunday, Oct 5 at 9:00 a.m.. Questions? Email [email protected]

BLACK LIGHT TRAILS WALK WITH JOE NUDELL

BLACK LIGHT TRAILS WALK WITH JOE NUDELL
Educational, Events

An exciting first-ever night time Hardwick Trails event is coming!

When:  8pm on Saturday August 23rd

Where:  meet at the Hardwick Trails trailhead behind Hazen at 8pm

Here is leader Joe Nudell’s description:
“Come see the woods in a whole new light — ultraviolet light, that is!
The Hardwick Trails is hosting its first ever blacklight walk at 8pm on Saturday August 23rd under the new moon.
The energy in the ultraviolet light spectrum causes certain materials to emit a colorful glow, called fluorescence. While UV light might make you think of raves or pet stains, there are actually many things in nature that fluoresce! Caterpillars, millipedes, spiders, mosses, lichens, mushrooms, and more. In fact, almost every plant glows red under a blacklight due to chlorophyll!
I know of a few fluorescent species we will encounter, but the main point of this walk is to be a fun exploration where we all share our knowledge and discover familiar things in a new light.
All are welcome. We have a few UV flashlights to share, but please bring your own if you have one. Also make sure to bring a normal headlamp or flashlight for safety, and to dress warmly — it’s starting to get chilly at night!
We will meet at the Hardwick Trails trailhead behind Hazen at 8pm on Saturday. It should be dark enough to begin our walk at the end of civil twilight, around 8:15pm!
