Saturday, JULY 6: ART on the HARDWICK TRAILS

Posted on June 30, 2024June 30, 2024 By Dave Mitchell
Events

Come join Susan Sawyer, artist-teacher-naturalist extraordinaire, for “Drawing the Forest from the Inside”. Her easy good humor and eye for ‘looking closer’ make her events fun.
Participants will have a slow walk on the Trails with stops to sit and draw. Susan will offer drawing tips, encouragement and a discussion of natural history. Bring your sketchbook toolkit or use the supplies Susan will have on hand. A cushion and a water bottle are good ideas.

The Hardwick Trails Committee sponsors this free event and invites all ages and skills. We meet at the Hardwick Trails Kiosk behind Hazen Union School parking lot. Questions? Call Norma Wiesen at 472-6517. We will cancel in case of rain.

FUNG-US AMONG-US: MUSHROOM WALK ON THE HARDWICK TRAILS
SATURDAY, JUNE 29 AT 9:00AM @ THE HARDWICK TRAILS KIOSK

Join Arthur Hynes and Joe Nudell for a fungus foray on the Hardwick Trails. We will learn the basics of mushroom ecology by walking through several different mushroom habitats on the trails and collecting a variety of different species — including potentially some edible ones! At the end of the walk we will go through our findings together and practice identifying mushrooms by examining their distinguishing features.

Arthur and Joe recommend bringing a foraging basket and/or paper bags, a sharp knife and brush, and a field guide, if you have one. You may also wish to bring a camera, the iNaturalist app on your phone, and gloves. (All mushrooms are perfectly safe to handle, but some can be slimy!!)

This free event is sponsored by the Hardwick Trails Committee. The Trails Kiosk is located behind the Hazen Union School parking lot.

SATURDAY BIRD WALK FINALE ON THE HARDWICK TRAILS

Birding, Events

The Every-Saturday-in-May Bird Walks on the Hardwick Trails’ finale is this Saturday (May 25) at 7:00am with Marie LaPre Grabon. Marie has truly “earned her wings” in birding and has enormous enthusiasm for helping folks hear and see these creatures. This past week has brought a crescendo of warblers to our area (along with many others), so we are in for a treat.

The highest total number of species on a single walk so far this season is 29. If you like competition, maybe you want to come and help make this final walk’s score even higher!

We meet at the Trails kiosk behind the Hazen Union parking lot.

The Hardwick Trails Committee sponsors these free events and welcomes seasoned and beginner birders of all ages. Questions? Call Norma Wiesen at 802-472-6517.
