When: Sep 12, 2026, 7:30 to 8:30 PM

Where: Trails Kiosk behind Hazen Union parking lot.

Ready to use blacklight to find what’s hiding in the night woods?
All ages are welcome to this exciting adventure on the Hardwick Trails.

Joe says: “Come see the world in a whole new light—ultraviolet light, that is! Blacklights reveal a phenomenon called fluorescence, causing certain objects to “pop” with bright neon colors. A number of things in the woods fluoresce, including millipedes, spiders, lichens, mushrooms, bones and even leafy green plants. It can be hard to identify everything under UV light, so we will focus on the colors and surprises we find, and not identification.
I will bring a few UV flashlights to share. You can bring your own blacklight, but be aware many inexpensive blacklights emit 400nm light which is more purple than ultraviolet. The best lights are 365nm UV lights.
We will be walking in the dark so dress appropriately and bring a “normal” headlamp or flashlight for safety.”

The Hardwick Trails Committee sponsors this free event and invites everyone to participate.

We meet at the Trails Kiosk behind Hazen Union parking lot.

Quote of the day…” I rode the Hardwick trails on Friday and I was blown away by how brilliant they are. I’ve ridden mountain bikes for 35 years and have ridden all over the country and those trails are truly some of the best! They are challenging but doable…it’s a similar experience to riding in Moab. As I was riding I kept saying to myself I have to thank whoever is behind these trails!”
